A GUIDE TO 5G AND ITS FUTURE
Change in the digital world of communications continues apace and the next generation of mobile internet connectivity known as 5G is currently supercharging this process of evolution.
Basically, 5G is able to do what its predecessor 4G still does, only it is bigger, faster and more consistent, offering greater bandwidth capability, higher download speeds and lower latency (the delay between action and response).
It is widely acknowledged that 5G can be up to one hundred times faster with one thousand times more capacity than 4G – a huge boost that underpins the continuing global success of digital connectivity.
However, 5G is not an outright replacement for the latest generation of 4G but instead, brings another more sophisticated layer to the existing networks in the UK and abroad. Meanwhile, improvements continue to be made to 4G and its own performance.
Boosted by the Internet of Things
The ever-growing demand for the greater network capacity and the better connectivity that is provided by 5G, is driven by a digital explosion known as the internet of things (IoT).
The IoT was originally the title of a presentation by a computer scientist and was picked up by commentators at the start of this century as part of the explanation of how digitalisation was having a major impact on our daily lives.
The phrase neatly describes how a massive range of every day and not-so everyday objects now have internet connectivity – from fridges to fitness trackers, from medical equipment to mirrors in bathrooms.
Not only can they be controlled via the digital network, but they also load and share the data that is generated as a result of their use and that can be used to improve efficiency and performance of the service they provide.
Making 5G Available in the UK
In the UK, the roll-out of 5G with all its benefits began in 2019 and is available in more than 300 of the busiest (in digital terms) towns and cities around the UK.
That figure will grow as the main mobile network operators continue their change programmes, enabling more businesses and their customers to benefit from the improved network connectivity.
